NATIONAL TRAIN YOUR DOG MONTH

In celebration of National Train Your Dog Month, we are thrilled to officially announce that the clinic’s Fear Free coordinator, Heather Mongiat, is now a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, CPDT-KA. (www.ccpdt.org) She has also passed the required tests to become a Fear Free Certified Animal Trainer. (www.fearfreepets.com

Heather has been working here with us since 2004. She has worked as a kennel assistant, veterinary assistant, receptionist and is now our Fear Fear Coordinator/ Social Media Manager. Most recently, she is our newest in-house dog trainer.  Many of our clients may already know her but probably didn’t know she had been working towards becoming a professional dog trainer.  She has also been a volunteer with Superior Land Pet Partners, (the local pet therapy organization) since 2010. She first started pet therapy work with her late Pit Bull, Angel. A few years later she started with her Siberian Husky, Dublin, who just retired in December, 2018. Currently she volunteers with her Pit Bull, Ethel. (www.petpartners.org).

Heather only uses humane, science-based training methods. None of the “letting them know who the boss is” or “alpha” theories are used here. Now that we are all Fear Free Certified ourselves, Heather’s training methods align perfectly with what we are trying to accomplish. All the improvements we have made at Northern Vet over the last year have been to remove as much fear, anxiety and stress from our patients as possible. We want all of our patients to enjoy coming to see us. The veterinary setting should not be a place of fear. With all of the new techniques available, having the veterinarians, staff, trainers and the owners all on board, it’s more than possible.

“Our mission is to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the people who care for them.”
